The Deputy Social Media and Platforms Editor will be responsible for supporting the social media and platforms editor in running the team. They will be working with senior editors in the newsroom to curate and commission stories, pictures and video content for our social media and third-party platforms including Apple News + and Google Showcase.

The successful candidate will be an experienced journalist who understands compelling and cutting edge ways that enliven our journalism, has data analysis, project management, social media and strong people-management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Writing and editing copy as well as adapting pictures and multimedia for social media platforms
  • Deputising for the social media and platforms editor and assisting with managing and developing the social media and platforms team
  • Editing and selecting content to appear on Apple News + and Google Showcase
  • Creating social media activity that engages its intended audience, inline with Times news values
  • Expertise in creative storytelling: comfortable using a variety of techniques, from GIFs to interactives, polls to live Q&As
  • Ability to pull editorial insights from data, understanding various platform-specific metrics to inform decisions
  • Champion the use of social media in the newsroom
  • This job requires regular working in our newsroom in London

Skills and experience

  • Experienced journalist with strong news judgment and people management skills
  • Demonstrable experience working on social media or third-party platforms
  • Highly organised, able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Able to collaborate with others, including senior editors and work well in groups
  • Flexible and committed, and able to generate ideas about how to improve our content
  • Can clearly articulate story ideas
  • Able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
