Alliance magazine is looking for a trained editor with experience in news reporting, writing, and editing, as well as a strong interest and appetite to learn more about global philanthropy.

Working two days a week, the new role of News Editor will join a growing editorial team to take over responsibility of Alliance’s existing news coverage. Alliance magazine is a nonprofit media organisation that has been providing coverage of global philanthropy and social investment for 27 years. Alliance has a strong team in place and a trusted track record of philanthropy coverage and an extensive global network. 

The News Editor’s principal responsibility is to ensure the daily publication of online news that covers stories from the global philanthropy sector, including stories on how philanthropy is interacting with climate, diversity, gender, and trends in technology. The News Editor will work with the Digital Editor to maintain high editorial quality.

Content production

  • Primary lead for news coverage of the global philanthropy sector
  • Choosing, reporting, and writing stories for daily publication following review of internal and external sources
  • Selecting news that represents a global spread of philanthropy stories, and working with contacts to provide analysis and insight
  • Analysing news stories through further research to add depth of understanding
  • Ensure Alliance’s coverage of philanthropy includes news about climate philanthropy, as well as diversity, gender philanthropy, and trends in technology
  • Ensure all content is accurate, informative, edited to house style and tone, and delivered by deadline
  • Uploading to CMS to a daily publication schedule of news on alliancemagazine.org
  • Analysing readership of stories online to understand trends and drive engagement in collaboration with the editorial team
  • Curate Global updates – a quarterly magazine spread bringing together the best of online news from around the world

Network building

  • Build and maintain a global network of contacts and contributors that can offer analysis and insight to our coverage
  • Develop expansive knowledge of the global philanthropy sector, the people and organisations in that space, and to keep up with the latest trends and developments

Working with the Alliance team

  • Attend weekly meetings with Digital Editor
  • Attend occasional editorial team meetings and play a role in ensuring a good level of coordination amongst the editorial team
  • Working with Alliance freelancers as required
  • Being an active team member and contributing ideas to the long-term development of Alliance
  • Working on required tasks relating to any other APT projects

Required skills

Essential

  • Experienced journalist, ready to manage your own work
  • News writing experience to ensure stories have a strong angle and clear flow of facts
  • Copy-editing skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong organisational skills, including working with multiple articles, authors, and sources at once in a systematic and coherent manner
  • Intellectual curiosity about philanthropy taking a keen interest in current affairs and showing awareness of how global events and trends might affect philanthropy

Desirable

  • Proficiency with WordPress
  • Knowledge of the philanthropy sector
  • Familiar with media law
