The Special Projects Correspondent finds exclusive news stories on topics at the top of the agenda for readers of The Telegraph. These articles should set the news agenda.

They are expected to produce series of articles, including writing stories that lead the website or splash the newspaper and long, in-depth reads. Their projects will include investigations.

The Special Projects Correspondent is also expected to run big live news stories as required, identifying the best news lines, finding exclusive angles and coordinating a team of reporters when necessary.

Please note: this is a fixed-term contract position, covering an internal secondment.

Key responsibilities

  • The Special Projects Correspondent is expected to bring in exclusive, agenda setting news stories.
  • They should be confident in writing front page stories and articles which lead the website.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to liaise with the newsdesk to plan exclusive stories and investigations, which will support The Telegraph’s subscription goals.
  • They will have to work to tight deadlines to identify and effectively communicate the strongest news lines of potential stories.
  • They must be flexible in organising their schedule around the deadline demands of the newsroom.
  • The successful candidate should maintain a strong awareness across the broader news agenda, with ideas on how to take stories on.
  • They must ensure stories are accurate and legally compliant.
  • They will be expected to build and maintain a strong network of relevant contacts.
  • The Special Projects Correspondent should develop an understanding of the stories which attract readers online, and that readers and subscribers to The Telegraph are interested in. Through your articles, you will help the company to reach its goal of attracting and retaining more subscribers online.

Key skills

  • Proven experience as a senior reporter within the newsroom of a national media organisation or equivalent and a track record of producing exclusive stories is essential.
  • Finely tuned journalistic instincts that mean you can spot a story and know how to craft compelling stories are essential.
  • A strong understanding of media law is essential.
  • Experience of planning and producing agenda-setting content across all platforms is essential.
  • Excellent knowledge of current affairs is essential.
  • An ability to write clear, accurate copy is essential.
  • A proven ability to develop sources and contacts is essential.
  • It is essential that candidates are able to process large amounts of detailed information quickly and accurately.
  • It is essential to be highly organised and able to work on multiple projects simultaneously while effectively prioritising different tasks.
  • It is essential to be a strong verbal communicator, who is able to explain stories succinctly and clearly to editors.
  • Knowledge of how best to present stories online is desirable.
