With over 600 journalists worldwide, we continue to grow and require an enthusiastic and talented Night News Editor to run our overnight news operation.
Profile
The role involves news editing and supporting the Night Editor – identifying stories and working with a team of reporters to deliver them speedily and accurately. The successful applicant will liaise with colleagues in London and teams around the world to provide compelling content for our readers.
The role also involves working alongside a Deputy Night News Editor to oversee the online publication of content from Daily Mail journalists.
The successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced 24-hour news environment and will be at their best when managing breaking news and balancing competing pressures in a calm and professional manner.
The Night News Editor is involved in the management of editorial production processes, assisting with news page editing and news gathering, all in accordance with the editorial objectives set by the UK Editor and the UK News Editor.
A strong track record of news gathering, editing and managing a team of reporters is essential, together with a thorough understanding of digital 24-hour news and the processes and pressures that come with operating in this environment.
Main Responsibilities
- Direct, develop and maintain the quality and output of rolling, 24-hour, digital news
- Manage a team of reporters and help them create fast, accurate and compelling stories
- Liaise with senior colleagues to assist the Night Editor
- Ability to write strong headlines
- Establish a strong production process, manage breaking news and identify content that engages our readership
- Understand analytics and digital readership to help curate the site
- Monitor the wires, rival publications and TweetDeck
