Summary:

Alliance is the preeminent media organisation covering philanthropy worldwide. 

Alliance is seeking an experienced magazine editor with expertise in publishing and editing, as well as an interest in philanthropy, to join our strong and growing team. Reporting to the Executive Editor, the Magazine Editor’s principal responsibility is to directly lead and manage our flagship quarterly print magazine. In addition, the Magazine Editor will develop a new online column and be part of our dynamic digital events programme. At all times, you will be expected to maintain high editorial quality in all our work.

Magazine Editor responsibilities

Editorial

  • Responsibility for the delivery of our flagship quarterly print magazine 
  • Magazine production: control of magazine production schedule, page plan, and shared folders
  • Magazine commissioning: commissioning analysis content, as well as coordinating and conducting interviews
  • Magazine coordination: oversight of photo research, cover visuals, copy editing, proofreading, feedback on first proofs, supervision of the upload of the magazine onto our website and our mailing and print distribution to a global readership
  • Magazine management: direct line management of in-house Features Editor, freelance photo researcher, and proof reader
  • Magazine writing: Writing quarterly editorials focused on amplifying the rich content in each issue
  • Magazine publishing: maintaining strong magazine publishing knowledge and best practices
  • Column: assuming responsibility for managing our online Funding Practice column examining funding models and exploring what makes for effective philanthropy
  • Events: Supporting our growing digital event programme by assuming responsibility for the editorial construction and moderation of up to eight events each year. 

Relationship building and sector knowledge

  • Develop expansive knowledge of the global philanthropy sector, the people and organisations in our space, and keep up with the latest trends and developments
  • Attend weekly editorial meetings and quarterly meetings of our Editorial Advisory Council
  • Maintain regular contact with key people and organisations across the global philanthropy sector
  • International travel to attend and cover philanthropy sector events


General

  • Being an active team member and contributing ideas to the long-term development of Alliance
  • Working on required tasks relating to any other APT projects

Essential characteristics:

  • Experience as a Magazine Editor 
  • Highly organised and with a proven ability to deliver to strict editorial schedules
  • High level of magazine editing skills including commissioning and working with authors
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to form strong relationships with all those involved in the running of Alliance in London and around the world: including the staff team, editorial advisory council, APT board, freelance editors and designers, and contributors and partners
  • Strong organisational skills including working with multiple articles and authors at once in a systematic and coherent manner
  • Intellectual curiosity about philanthropy worldwide, a keen interest in current affairs and showing awareness of how philanthropy intersects with global events.

Desirable:

  • Experience working in the philanthropy sector and/or knowledge of the global philanthropy field
  • Enjoy working in a small team and fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to work alongside people in different geographies, backgrounds and contexts
  • Knowledge of a second language
