Job Details
We are looking for a Senior Manager, Managing Editor to join our award-winning Research Professional News team, leading our journalists to produce high-impact daily news and analysis on research policy, funding and higher education in the UK, Europe and around the world.
About you – experience, education, skills, and accomplishments
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.
- 10 + years relevant experience.
- A strong track record working on publications that produce impactful, independent journalism.
- High levels of literacy and numeracy and a flair for written English.
- Experience managing a team of journalists.
- Strong practical knowledge of media law.
It would be great if you also had . . .
- A keen interest in research, science, policy and higher education. Experience covering these fields will be an advantage.
- Strong experience in digital journalism.
- Excellent communication skills.
What will you be doing in this role?
- Manage the operational delivery of content across our online daily news service and fortnightly digital publications.
- Deputise for the Director / Editor-in-chief where needed, having the final call on publication of sensitive stories and responding appropriately to any issues that arise.
- Work in partnership with the Editor-in-chief to agree and implement a clear content strategy – including priority themes for coverage and mix of content – reviewing and evolving this on a regular basis.
- Work with the Editor-in-chief and other stakeholders on plans for the long term, strategic development of our editorial products, and manage their execution.
- Develop the impact of our coverage – in terms of page views, subscriber engagement, memorability, brand visibility, multi-platform initiatives, national media pick up, awards and other recognition.
- Ensure coverage is adequately mitigated against libel risk, escalating any concerns and flagging risk to the Editor-in-chief as necessary.
- Ensure content is published to the highest levels of accuracy, is presented in an engaging, journalistic style, and is appropriate to our tone and audience.
- Chair / present at external and internal events and represent the publication at networking events with senior sector figures, being a respected authority in the sector.
- Manage a team of 10 people (direct and indirect).
- Deliver consistent and timely training, guidance and feedback to encourage success and promote colleague growth through regular developmental conversations and identification of developmental opportunities.

Hours of work
This is a permanent full-time position. The position is hybrid going to our central office in London 2-3 times per week.
