Job Details
We are looking for an experienced News Editor to join us at the Mirror. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in shaping and setting the news agenda read by millions around the world every day.
We are looking for an experienced, versatile journalist and editor who can maintain the quality of our news output whilst supporting a team of dynamic reporters.
We’re looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives from people from a wide range of backgrounds, and we want you to tell us the stories you believe are important from our many communities so we can continue to diversify our content.
This is a maternity cover fixed term contract role, initially for 9 months.
This role is hub based, linked to our London Hub. We are therefore open to candidates based in and around London.
What will the role involve?
You will head up the online news desk, helping the Head of News and Deputies to drive coverage on major breaking news stories both domestic and foreign. You will find, break and source exclusives, ensuring the Mirror stays a step ahead of our rivals. You will sub edit and manage copy to ensure it is accurate, attention grabbing and up to the Mirror standard. You will work closely with our print teams to optimise content wherever possible.
You will assess and propose areas of growth within the newsroom and ensure the site is always up to date and accurate. You will guide and support journalists in your team while simultaneously ensuring all copy is legally sound and meets IPSO guidelines. This position will involve weekend and evening shifts on a rota pattern, so a flexible approach is required.
Who are we looking for?
You are an experienced senior journalist and editor with an NCTJ or equivalent journalism qualification and in depth knowledge of media law. You have a lengthy track record of writing and editing breaking news stories in a national newsroom and understand what works for a digital audience. You think on your feet and act quickly, keeping up with the pace of a busy, national newsroom with ease.
You have first rate editing, writing and subbing skills and you relish the test of working under pressure to tight deadlines. You have a clear passion for breaking exclusive news stories and know how to encourage your team to do the same. You’re social media savvy with current SEO knowledge and a bursting book of industry contacts. You have an excellent eye for detail and can provide reporters in your team with guidance and encouragement.
What can we offer you?
We are offering a competitive salary and benefits including;
- Help saving for your retirement - join our pension scheme and we’ll match contributions up to 6%
- 33 days’ holiday per year (including bank holidays) when you join. After three, five and ten years’ service with Reach, you’ll accrue one additional day of annual leave. We also have a Holiday Purchase Scheme
- Giving back day - an additional day’s leave each year to support a cause close to your heart
- Enhanced family leave - including maternity, paternity and adoption - and you’ll be eligible after just six months’ employment
- Private Healthcare Cash Plan - free health cash plan so you can claim back cash for a range of medical expenses
- As one of the UK’s top 50 Inclusive Employers everyone’s invited to join our events, programmes and networks to celebrate diversity and build an environment where all our people can thrive
- Wellbeing support - including a 24/7 employee assistance programme (EAP) for you and your nearest and dearest
- Awesome career opportunities - you’ll have support from your line manager and a range of learning & development programmes
