Job Introduction

I is looking for a Head of Newsletter to oversee, improve and expand our newsletter portfolio, with the goal of increasing readership and deepening engagement. Prior experience using analytics to drive open rates, improve click-through rates and increase engagement is critical.

Newsletters remain one of the most impactful ways news organisations can deliver their news directly to readers. This critical role will help to ensure we grow and retain our digital subscribers. In addition to making sure that our current Newsletters are must-reads, you will be responsible for evaluating new opportunities to expand our newsletter portfolio. The right candidate must have strong news judgement and experience collaborating with tech, analytics and other teams to deliver new products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and oversee a fresh approach for i's growing newsletter portfolio.
  • Use data and analytics to develop a deep understanding of our readers' behaviour when reading i's stories via one of our newsletters.
  • Create and set best practice designed to support the business's subscription and revenue ambitions.
  • Experiment with new ways to sell stories, A/B testing subject lines and other innovative ways to engage our readers.
  • Adopt a data-informed approach to increase open rates, engagement and sign-ups. Working collaboratively with our social team, find new ways to drive awareness of our newsletters on social media
  • Assess opportunities to launch new reader experiences driven by newsletters, conducting research and using data to guide judgement, and pitch ideas to the wider team.
  • Work with editorial, product and marketing to launch/develop new products and optimise existing offerings.

Skills and Experience

  • At least 3 to 4 years creating, writing, and editing newsletters. (Your previous experience with newsletters does not need to be for a newsroom, but you must be able to demonstrate strong news judgement.)
  • Strong experience using analytics to make newsletter decisions and understand how readers are consuming what we send.
  • Experience using a/b testing tools and newsletter publishing tools. (Meaning, you don’t want to just put together good newsletters and hit send: you want to make sure people read and enjoy them.)
  • Able to collaborate across teams, from product, to revenue, to editorial.
  • Must really care about connecting readers with trustworthy news stories.
  • Experience of managing a team and collaborating with cross-department stakeholders
  • Finally: you must be excited at the role newsletters can play in delivering the news to readers.
