The Mail on Sunday is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Health Reporter to join our dynamic team. Our health section is a trusted and authoritative voice, offering the latest health news, insightful analysis, and expert advice. This is a fantastic opportunity for an individual with around two years of reporting experience and a special interest in health and medical issues.

Main Responsibilities Include:

  • Pitching Story Ideas:
    • Develop and pitch compelling story ideas to the Health Editors on a daily basis, aiming to produce at least one or two high-quality stories each week.
  • Owning the Health Section’s Weekly News Pages:
    • Take full ownership of the weekly news page, finding exclusive stories, reporting on treatment innovations, healthcare issues, and controversies that resonate with our health-conscious readership.
    • Ensure content is timely, relevant, and engaging to maintain the section’s reputation as a go-to source for health news
  • ​​​​​Identifying Major Stories:
    • Stay vigilant for larger stories that could lead to major investigations, special reports, or headline-grabbing topics.
    • ​​​​​​​Collaborate with editors to develop these stories into comprehensive pieces.
  • ​​​​​​​Writing Clear, Accessible Copy:
    • Produce tight, clean copy under tight deadlines, ensuring the language is simple and accessible to a general audience.
    • Maintain high journalistic standards, with an emphasis on accuracy, clarity, and readability.
  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​Collaborating with Agencies, Stringers and Freelancers:
    • ​​​​​​​Work closely with agencies, stringers and freelancers on medical news stories, providing guidance and support as needed
    • Build and maintain connections with experts across various health fields, including public health, government policy, research science, drug development, surgery, medicine, nutrition, and more.
  • ​​​​​​​Continuous Learning and Adaptability:
    • ​​​​​​​Stay updated with the latest developments in health and medical journalism.
    • Be prepared to adapt to the evolving needs of the business, which may include out-of-hours availability and the ability to quickly pivot to cover breaking news.

Person Specification:

  • Experience and Interest:
    • Ideally, candidates will have experience in newspaper or medical press reporting and a background in health journalism.
    • A strong interest in health topics and a passion for uncovering the stories they present is essential.
  • Skills and Attributes:
    • Excellent writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and engaging content.
    • Strong research and investigative skills, with the ability to identify and develop complex health-related stories.
    • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, with strong organizational and time-management skills.
    • High level of adaptability and willingness to work flexible hours when needed.
