Job Description
i is looking for a highly experienced Managing Editor to join the newsroom at a crucial and exciting time in its growth journey. This is a rare and unique opportunity to join a title that has, in under three years, built a strong digital subscriber audience, grown its reach to over 11m users a month and broken some of the biggest scoops in UK journalism. i also has a strong and robust print circulation that continues to gain market share and benefit from investment.
The successful candidate will report to the Executive Managing Editor and work closely with other senior executives to deliver i's editorial and digital goals, as well as overseeing budgets, recruitment, and personnel. This role involves both strategic planning and day-to-day operational management of i’s editorial team, working with finance, HR, commercial and editorial execs to ensure the smooth running of the business. Organisational skills, leadership and problem-solving are all key.
Main Responsibilities
- Budget management: set budgets in conjunction with other management executives and ensure that they are kept to
- Lead on regulatory issues including liaison with Ipso, compliance, pre and post publication advice and complaints handling
- HR: lead on personnel issues. Work with HR to manage personnel matters and ensure the smooth running of i editorial
- Oversee recruitment, working with senior executives and section heads to lead talent identification, hiring and retention across all departments
- Digital transformation: work with senior executives to help drive the wider transformation of the newsroom to support business subscription goals
Person Specification
Essential
- Significant experience in a national news environment, including executive experience as a desk head, or significant managerial experience in a news environment
- Significant experience in liaising with legal and editorial teams to ensure complex stories meet rigorous journalistic standards
- Experience in digital newsroom transformation
- Ability to run budgets and manage those who are running budgets
- Proven people manager with experience of running teams of 15 or more
- Familiarity with operating in regulated environments and understanding of complaints handling processes
- Experience of working in digital and/or print at a high level
- Substantial experience of HR issues including talent recruitment
