About the Role
As the Editor of Classic Boat, you will join a team committed to maintaining the highest editorial standards. You will collaborate closely with the Publisher and colleagues in the digital, sales, and marketing teams to plan and produce the magazine on time and within budget.
Classic Boat has a long-established and loyal readership worldwide, particularly in North America. The editor must understand this specialist audience and work to grow it both in print and online while identifying revenue-generating opportunities. You will also represent the publication at industry events, acting as an ambassador for the brand.
Essential Skills
- Experience in a similar editorial role
- Experience managing a team of freelancers, as well as a sub-editor and art editor
- The confidence to lead, inspire, motivate, and empower team members
- A proactive attitude towards networking and building relationships with commercial partners
- Hands-on experience in end-to-end print production and the ability to meet strict deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt when necessary
- Knowledge of image rights and permissions
- Proficiency in digital content management systems (CMS) and InDesign (or similar software)
Key Responsibilities
- Producing 12 issues a year, plus special projects
- Collaborating closely with the digital content team to ensure that every commissioned piece of content can be utilized across multiple platforms to reach a broad audience
- Drafting advance feature lists three months ahead of the publication date for the current issue and updating them weekly
- Providing flat plans for the next issue the day after the press date of the previous issue, ensuring they remain accurate and up-to-date
- Sending a selection of three to four alternative first-draft covers to the Publisher at least two weeks before the press date
- Leading monthly meetings with sales and advertising teams to plan future features
- Ensuring the editorial team understands how their work directly contributes to the brand's growth and success through mentoring and performance reviews
