Role purpose and overview

The Editor/Publisher role is for a dynamic and experienced senior journalist, leading The Tribune's direction and reporting in the Bahamas.

This is a rare opportunity to take over the Bahamas' most established daily national newspaper and shape an exciting future.

In keeping with its crusading legacy it will involve delivering, writing and producing editorial that informs and enlightens a Bahamian readership as well as content that is open to a more global audience. 

The challenge also involves developing The Tribune brand.

The Editor/Publisher will help lead The Tribune's digital transformation to deliver content across digital, audio, video and social platforms as well as print.

Key responsibilities

  • Senior member of The Tribune's team, covering Bahamas affairs and responsible for the daily production of the newspaper.
  • Generating ideas, writing interesting and well-informed content across Bahamian news and affairs for both online and print publication.
  • Responding to and directing breaking news stories and provide longer form pieces, including comment and features when required.
  • Setting the editorial tone of The Tribune and driving campaigning journalism.
  • Planning coverage of future events and longer term projects.
  • Focus on digital storytelling and the use of analytics and social media to develop and retain an online audience.
  • React to the demands of a 24/7 online news environment.

Key skills

  • Significant journalistic experience of writing and editing for a newspaper or website.
  • Knowledge of Bahamian affairs is preferable.
  • Interest in and knowledge of multimedia storytelling.
  • Previous experience of editing is essential.
  • Experienced in both breaking news and working on longer pieces, projects, comments, campaigns and features.
  • Ability to keep calm under pressure and to work to tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge and experience of digital publishing preferred.
  • Excellent leadership, motivational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead, direct and develop a team of journalists.
  • An understanding of social media platforms and consumer trends.
  • Highly organised individual who recognises the importance of structure and planning.
  • Seek out and embrace new ways of thinking and working – not afraid to fail.

The team and role purpose

This will be the first change of Editor/Publisher at The Tribune in more than 50 years and will entail a new focus on helping develop a digital-first newsroom. You will direct and help implement an evolving strategy for our editorial operations towards story-first digital centric publishing.

Entrepreneurial and operationally accomplished, you have the skills to both direct day-to-day coverage across news, sport and lifestyle features and as well as drive deeper change across the business to embed digital ways of working.

You will be expected to understand data and how audience behaviours are changing and how The Tribune can adapt to the modern converged newsroom. You will be responsible for increasing both the scale of The Tribune’s reach and the depth of engagement with our digital products.

You will also be excellent at commercial collaboration, with an understanding of managing the transition to a subscription audience model, to create a diversified, sustainable content business.
