Job Type
Full Time

City A.M. is looking to hire a motivated, knowledgeable and adaptable sports reporter to work on a small but busy desk.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable writing authoritatively on all major sports – football, rugby union, cricket, tennis, golf, Formula One – and have knowledge of their current landscapes.

While including some live reporting and interviewing, the role is predominately office based and, as well as identifying and writing stories, involves sub-editing and finalising the section before publication. Input into all aspects of newspaper production, including design and picture choice are involved, so knowledge of these areas would be an advantage.

Strong news sense, a flair for picking out the best news lines and a clear, accurate, concise writing style are essential. An ability to write clean copy and willingness to take responsibility are paramount as City A.M. operates a sub-free system.

It should be noted that readiness to work hard and unsociable hours is fundamental. The role requires working five afternoon-night shifts a week, from Sunday to Thursday inclusive, often finishing after midnight.

Some experience of working on the sports desk of a national or regional newspaper is required, as is a thorough understanding of City A.M. and its place in the market. Journalism training is preferred but not a prerequisite.

The successful candidate will report to the sports editor and will be required to deputise for him when necessary.

This is an outstanding opportunity to join a thriving publication and, in return for dedication and a strong team attitude, enjoy covering the sports you love.
