Smarta, Blogger and Social Media Geek
Role: Blogger and social media geek
Job Type: Full Time/Permanent
Closing date: May 20th 2011
Location: Central London
Start date: ASAP
We’re searching for a brilliant blogger and social media geek to join the Smarta editorial team.
Working alongside seasoned small business hacks Matt Thomas (@smartamatt) and Bex Burn-Callander (@sparky000), you’ll be a self-starter with bags of initiative and ideas to bring to the UK’s coolest business website.
You can have zero or a decade’s experience, an MA in journalism or a BTEC in catering, but you’ll have to prove (not just promise) you’ve got a nose for a story and the razor sharp wordsmithery to quickly turn it into stimulating, practical brainfood to feed Smarta readers hungry for advice they can act on.
You’ll be equally capable of interviewing some of the biggest names in British business as you are grabbing a Flip on the fly and finding out what the first-day start-up you’ve stumbled across is most concerned about.
You’ll already be up for getting friendly with @smartaHQ’s Twitter following and eager to tell us how you’d build on our existing Facebook and YouTube presence. If you’re not an active user of social media, you’ll realise you’re going to have to pull out something special to convince us you’re our geek.
You don’t need an in-depth knowledge of business so don’t let that put you off, but we do expect you to have a genuine interest in the stories behind Britain’s best-loved brands and what makes three guys quit well-paid marketing jobs to start making smoothies. You’ll also be desperate to get inside the heads of Smarta’s readers to find out what really makes them tick.
Joining a close-knit team of lovely but dedicated obsessives working their wotsits off to build something special together will motivate you more than it puts you off and you’ll relish getting thrown in at the deep end.
Of course, you’ll be organised, do deadlines, work hard and all that, but more than anything, you’ll be passionate about building brilliant web content that constantly pushes to exceed reader expectation.
If that’s you, you’re our blogger and social media geek – skip to the bottom and apply.
Other stuff that’d be nice
• Strong interviewing technique and a personable nature
• Proofreading and sub-editing skills
• Picture editing skills
• Clear understanding of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

An energetic, London-based web start-up with global ambitions, Smarta was founded in 2009 by Shaa Wasmund (deckchair.com, mykindplace.com) and is backed by an impressive line-up of entrepreneurs including Theo Paphitis and Deborah Meaden (Dragons’ Den) and Bebo’s Michael & Xochi Birch. Smarta’s ‘how-to’ advice content, blog and entrepreneur interviews provide the advice and inspiration needed to successfully start and run your own business, while the recently launched Smarta Business Builder (www.smarta.com/businessbuilder) provides the tools for getting the job done.
Email Smarta’s editor Matt Thomas, at firstname.lastname@example.org with a CV and covering letter explaining why you’re suitable and what excites you most about the challenge, along with details and examples of your previous work. Please don’t just send us the same letter you send to everybody else or we’ll look for somebody else. We can’t wait to hear from you.
