This is an exciting opportunity to join the Church of England’s busy Communications Office based at Church House, London, in a senior role leading on daily media issues.


Working alongside the Head of Media as part of the Media Team, you will be handling media issues of all varieties but with a particular focus on the areas of education, church buildings and the environment.

You will play a key role in maintaining and developing a proactive communications office and will be called upon to offer strategic and operational advice to directors, bishops and other senior colleagues at Church House and Lambeth Palace.

Interviews will be held on Monday 18 December 2017 / Tuesday 19 December 2017.


  • Explaining and promoting the work of the Church of England.
  • Leading and managing relationships on the education and church buildings briefs.
  • Working alongside and supporting the network of Diocesan communications Officers across the country.
  • Working with the Media Team on the daily news grid system to promote and co-ordinate strategic communications.
  • Assisting the Director of Communications and the Head of Media in the day-to-day operation of the media team.
  • Dealing with enquiries from regional, national and international media at every level.
  • Arranging and managing interviews and other media events, working closely with the media team on podcasts, recordings and photo shoots.
  • Drafting and researching press releases, including supervising junior team members.
  • Providing editorial guidance on the website and other areas where needed. 
  • Being part of the out-of-hours on-call duty press office rota.
  • Liaising with key stakeholders: other Church House staff; Lambeth Palace staff; Bishopthorpe Palace; Diocesan Communications Officers; Bishops.
  • Attending events where needed to promote the central work of the Church of England.
  • Providing media advice to bishops, directors within the National Church Institutions and other senior staff in dioceses, when required.
  • Working with the Head of Media to maintain the day-to-day news diary, proactively identifying good news stories, areas for comment or potential issues which may lead to negative coverage.  
  • Arranging regular liaison and meetings with national journalists through personal contact.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with Diocesan Communications Officers to support them in their work.


Skills / Aptitudes:

  • Proactive, with an eye for a news story.
  • Track record of strategic communications.
  • Ability to work under pressure, often to changing and simultaneous deadlines.
  • Ability to differentiate the important from the urgent. 
  • An understanding of forward news planning. 
  • Adept and fully conversant with social media.
  • Excellent communication skills including written, oral, negotiating, influencing and presentation skills.
  • Good contacts with the media. 
  • Ability to deal sensitively and diplomatically with a range of people.
  • Ability to represent the Church of England effectively and with confidence.
  • Understanding of and capacity to develop the Church’s media profile.
  • Excellent IT skills.

Knowledge / Experience:

  1. Significant communications/media experience at a senior level.
  2. Experience of crisis management.
  3. Ability to operate independently and deputise for the Head of Media in a media advisory role. 
  4. Experience of managing or leading a communications/media team. 
  5. Experience of forward news planning.
  6. Grasp of the Church of England and the Anglican Communion.


  • NCTJ qualified (National Council for the Training of Journalists) or equivalent PR/media qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience of professional standards
  • Experience of managing and delivering change.
