Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an editor with strong communication and organizational skills to play a linchpin role in coordinating newsroom coverage plans.

Working with the Planning Editor, this editor will manage editorial calendars and news planning tools, and will be responsible for ensuring they are updated with the latest plans from coverage and bureau chiefs.

This person will also help to ensure plans are shared with visual and video departments, as well as with platform editors and product developers. This person will support the effort to make the newsroom's workflow more focused on digital and audience priorities.

This editor will also drive the selection and preparation of the best Wall Street Journal content for submission into journalism competitions, including the Pulitzer Prizes, the Gerald Loeb Awards, and the Overseas Press Club Awards.

He or she coordinates with top editors to identify the best content packages, strategize where they should be entered, and work through often-complex entry processes.

Tasks / Responsibilities

  • Assist the Planning Editor with execution of the medium- and long-term journalism coverage plans for The Wall Street Journal on all platforms.
  • Uphold WSJ values and mission as well as audience-centric quality standards on all platforms.
  • Assist coverage chiefs with defining coming news events and opportunities for advance plans, and help the Planning Editor ensure that each coverage team is properly planning and executing them. Keep senior editors informed.
  • Maintain planning standards, frameworks and tools for all journalism created in the WSJ multi-platform newsroom.
  • Work with the Dow Jones marketing team on promoting content projects/coverage series/"campaigns"/initiatives, as directed.
  • Work with the live journalism/conference team on event programming.
  • Monitor our coverage throughout the year with an eye to potential prize-worthy packages. Work with the Coverage Planning Editor to identify what elements could strengthen the packages.
  • Maintain the calendar of prize competition deadlines, work with Coverage Planning Editor to determine which competitions we should enter, and develop a full understanding of the rules and idiosyncrasies of each competition, to ensure successful entries.
  • As the main prize season approaches, convene senior editors to determine which packages are best to enter and where they should be submitted.
  • Coordinate and lead the effort to review and ensure that all necessary components of the prize package are accurate and complete, including story lists, nomination letters, questionnaires and reporter/editor details as necessary.
  • Serve as the Journal's primary point-person to follow-up questions from the various external coordinators, including details around judge access to the nominated content, the specifics of any citations, etc.


  • Inspire our journalists to produce their best work on all platforms.
  • Lead by example and positive attitude to showcase the benefits of intensive planning and communication throughout the newsroom.
  • Contribute by attitude, example and encouragement to a culture of creativity, enthusiasm, motivation, ownership and professionalism.
  • Set standards for individual and team performance - ongoing and in regular performance reviews.
