Caters News Agency, Bureau Chief (Australia)
Who are we?
Caters News is the UK's oldest independent press agency, founded by Herbert Cater in 1927.
Since then, we have grown to become a truly global news, picture and video agency and are a trusted content supplier to hundreds of editorial and commercial clients worldwide.
Today, the Caters group has more than 60 staff working out of seven offices on five continents – our Birmingham HQ, New York, New Delhi and Sydney bureaux, and the Manchester and Liverpool offices of our sister agency Mercury Press.
At Caters, our journalists fill newspapers, magazines, TV networks, websites and social media pages with top quality stories, photographs and videos every day – covering everything from breaking news to the offbeat real-life tales, which get everyone talking.
This is the perfect chance for a news editor or experienced senior reporter to move into an exciting and growing sector of the industry and shape and oversee the continued development of Caters' Sydney hub in creative Pyrmont, close to the CBD.
Who are you?
We are looking for an energetic and self-motivated professional with the skills and confidence necessary to take the helm as Bureau Chief in our Australia office.
You should be a talented journalist and proven ideas generator with the managerial ability to inspire and bring out the best in our small but dynamic team of reporters to ensure they generate the exceptional content Caters is known for.
You will have impeccable news sense with a track record of getting the story first, a sharp eye for detail and a sound grasp of media law – making the correct judgement calls without hesitation to ensure our content is of the highest editorial and legal standards.
The right candidate will be extremely well-organised and comfortable managing and growing a bank of freelancers, contributors, stringers and syndication partners across Australia and New Zealand to ensure we never miss the scoop – or the freshest exclusive content.
Balancing this editorial role with the management of all Caters syndication, rights management and content marketing across Australia and New Zealand means strong business acumen and having a head for figures as well as the nose for a story is essential.
You will have the ability to think creatively when working with new and existing media clients to negotiate and close sales, pitch exclusives, facilitate commissions, strengthen relationships and develop profitable new opportunities and partnerships.
This will require a flawless understanding not only of the Caters brand but of the ever-changing face of the modern digital news landscape to ensure our content is packaged and tailored most appropriately for our varied client base in traditional and emerging media.
The right candidate will be results-driven and not afraid of targets, with the self-assurance necessary to represent the company externally to clients and customers.
Ideal applicants will have at least three years' experience at a news agency, newspaper, women's magazine or online publication.
Experience of syndication, content marketing or commissioning is preferred but a thirst to learn, impress and take on the challenge in this area is more important.
Please submit a CV and cover letter, including explanation of your current Australian working rights and salary expectations to Chris Dyche by completing the application form below.
All candidates must have full working rights in Australia through existing eligible visa, citizenship or Aus/NZ dual nationality.
