Full Time

EG, the UK’s premium source of real estate intelligence, has accelerated its digital transformation over the last 18 months. April’s launch of Radius Data Exchange, a four-year project to create a contributory database and news and analysis service backed with £4m of RBI investment, means rapid transformation is a business imperative.

It now needs a skilled, dedicated digital desk whose outputs flow into print. A print production desk which can incorporate aspects of digital into its workflow is no longer sufficient.

This requires a differently skilled team to a traditional subbing team. And it requires a different structure which is focused on processes and workflow, getting things right first time and optimisation.

The digital desk will still oversee EG’s print output which is an increasingly seasonal business with spikes in March (MIPIM), June (LREF) and October (MIPIM UK and EXPO). As our events business moves into an operation that focuses on fewer, big events, this will only become more pronounced.

The desk requires the following capabilities:

  • A proper digital-first and best workflow which optimises for online but prepares copy for digital editions and print simultaneously
  • Use of metrics to ensure we are optimising engagement
  • Cross-linking to encourage longer dwell time online
  • Social media promotion
  • A focus on more than words: infographics prepared for online using a platform and process which allows them to flow into print; a selection of images included wherever possible online, with the best taken into print; best use of podcasts and videos.
  • Copy should optimised for online (SEO’d, optimal tagging, embedded social media posts, no PDFs / captured images, links to relevant stories and data)
  • Ability to work closely with marketing to build pages that combine events and other product promotion alongside content.

  • Prepares articles digital first, right first time. Ensures copy is proof read, accurate and consistent - without typos in the article or errors in the urls, and fully and appropriately tagged. Identifies and remedies potential libels in copy.
  • Lays out pages to set templates for web and print.
  • Writes catchy headlines which grab the attention of online users and are optimised for SEO without giving the whole story away. Understands the difference between print and online headlines and delivers both effectively.
  • Works with writers, editors and analysts to understand their stories and our audience. Thinks about how we can present this to our users to make our content even more compelling Understands our business and sees the full picture when it comes to publishing content and where it might appear. Thinks how content and events and our data businesses knit together and how we can cross promote through linking etc.
  • Thinks about more than just words to include graphics, pictures, videos and podcasts and when provided with just words thinks about ways to change this and present it cleanly, simply and in a more engaging way for the user.
  • Thinks about mobile optimisation and when producing an article thinks in thumb strokes on a screen. Works to insert banners, quotes, pictures and graphs at these key points to keep our audience on our site.
  • Is able to recognise links between various types of content and direct a reader towards it, providing them with targeted related content they didn’t know they wanted to read before they saw it.
  • Embeds social posts, videos, podcasts into articles Includes links, and a variety of styles for linking (such as words, pictures, graphs) to pull users further into Radius Data Exchange
  • Works within our current guidelines on where our content gate should fall on articles to maximise registrations
  • Spots trends in the content they are subbing and suggests ways for EG to capitalise on this
  • Thinks about ways to promote this content to the widest audience
  • Writes social posts, thinks about hashtags, @ people and how to craft the post so it is optimised for each platform
  • Makes suggestions for including trending or great content on the homepage. Includes evergreen, older, related content.
  • Uses the metrics and tips reports to think how we can change our content on site. Thinks about ways to embed simple changes into their workflow.
  • Suggests new features we should introduce on site.
  • Prepares push notifications for the app thinking about when these should be produced and what they should say
  • Embraces change and is able to work independently rather than just under instruction. Challenges, where appropriate, best practise.
  • Ability to work closely with marketing to build pages that combine events and other product promotion alongside content.
