Purpose of job:

To plan and deliver the business and money pages of i on a daily basis in conjunction with the Deputy Business Editor.

The role will involve monitoring news sources to plan the pagesi, conceiving and developing exclusive stories and planning future coverage. The role covers print and digital and will involve some personal finance features. This role involves some Sunday working.

About i

i is Britain’s brightest and newest national newspaper. It was bought from ESI Media in 2016 and has evolved into a highly successful standalone title, bolstered last year by the relaunch of the iweekend edition. We are currently on a recruitment drive so we can produce even more of our own original content.

The inews.co.uk website has embarked on a period of steep growth. Last year its audience grew by 457%. The i’s editorial staff has grown every year since its launch to match the audience and financial success of the brand across all platforms.

Key areas of responsibility

  1. Ensure high quality finance and money news coverage across all platforms, and guiding reporters and the deputy business editor to develop stories.
  2. Present stories and ideas at daily news conferences.
  3. Monitoring the wires, stock market announcements and social media to spot news stories.
  4. Edit copy.
  5. Work closely with specialist digital editors and the main home news desk.
  6. Show initiative and produce a consistently high standard of work without supervision.
  7. Help meet the audience needs of the various platforms ensuring adherence to production deadlines
  8. Pursue editorial strategies that grow audience, and encourage audience interaction and contribution
  9. Work with commercial departments to develop revenue streams from the business section.
  10. Work with colleagues across other JPIMedia titles - which include The Scotsman, the Yorkshire Post and more than 150 other regional and local titles across the United Kingdom - to share journalism and ideas.
  11. Write comment and analysis.


Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Business reporting or editing experience on a national newspaper, a trade publication or a significant news website.
  • Track record of developing stories to create impactful journalism.
  • Track record of working in a breaking news environment.
  • Strong knowledge of sourcing, developing and presenting exclusive stories.
  • Comfortable working to tight deadlines.
  • Command of libel law, understanding of and compliance with Editors’ Code of Practice and IPSO regulations. NCTJ (or similar) standard qualification.
  • Able to write quickly, accurately and with flair.


Desirable

  • Understanding of and experience with print production systems.
  • Experience of working in a multiplatform environment.
