Purpose of job:

To draw, sub and revise the sports pages of the i paper on a daily basis in conjunction with the sports editor and his team.

The role will involve laying out the pages in Adobe InDesign, choosing and placing pictures, pulling in copy from various sources, subbing stories and revising them to a high standard. Tasks may also include some writing and news-editing.

i is Britain’s brightest and newest national newspaper. It was bought from ESI Media in 2016 and has evolved into a highly successful standalone title, bolstered last year by the relaunch of the iweekend edition. We are currently on a recruitment drive so we can produce even more of our own original content.

The inews.co.uk website has embarked on a period of steep growth. Last year its audience grew by 457%. The i’s editorial staff has grown every year since its launch to match the audience and financial success of the brand across all platforms.

Key areas of responsibility

  1. Design and lay out the sports pages using Adobe InDesign.
  2. Have an eye for bold and striking photography and an understanding of how to incorporate photos into brilliant newsprint design.
  3. Sub and revise stories
  4. News-edit copy.
  5. Write concise, accurate and engaging headlines tailored to the different platforms.
  6. Show initiative and produce a consistently high standard of work without supervision.


Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Sports desk experience on a national newspaper or a major regional newspaper, which should include both layout and sub-editing experience.
  • Examples of striking design work.
  • Comfortable working to very tight deadlines.
  • Command of libel law, understanding of and compliance with Editors’ Code of Practice and IPSO regulations.
  • NCTJ (or similar) standard qualification.
  • Must be able to write quickly, accurately and with flair.


Desirable

  • Experience of working in a multiplatform environment
  • A background or interest in digital sports journalism and social media.
  • An ability to write original news stories / features.


Critical Skills and Competencies

  • High standards of written English.
  • Ability to assess and make sound judgments on multiple sources of information.
  • Thorough knowledge of a wide range of sports, including football, cricket and rugby union.
  • A command of English grammar and a hawk-like eye for spotting errors.
  • Understanding of what makes news stories of interest to i readers.
  • Good visual sense.
  • Ability and confidence to pitch ideas for original articles to the Sports Editor.
  • Ability to work with other teams effectively against deadline.
  • High standards of accuracy
  • Good organisation, people management skills.
  • Good IT skills and ability to learn.
  • Digital publishing skills.
