Head of Audience

Yahoo UK is seeking an experienced, energetic and deeply skilled audience lead who is passionate about journalism to lead our rapidly growing distribution team.

  • Leading a multi-disciplinary team, the Head of Audience will design and execute a strategy to grow Yahoo UK’s reach, loyalty and engagement to ensure our forward-thinking reporting lands with maximum impact.
  • Your strategy will decide all aspects of content distribution, including search, homepage and app layout, notifications, social media and our third-party relationships.
  • Your editorial experience at a senior level will enable you to work with the editor-in-chief and leadership team to shape and execute your vision for audience development both on and off network.
  • You will be a key influencer in our commissioning process, including video, guiding our leadership team to make sure our reporting is designed with an audience in mind.Leading our analysts, you will help surface sophisticated and actionable insights that shape our distribution strategies.
  • You will help develop Yahoo UK’s loyalty initiatives, growing our regular audience of returning visitors and helping shape products designed to deepen our relationship with our readers


Key responsibilities

  • Running a growing audience team to best curate Yahoo UK journalism across multiple platforms, balancing resources to deliver audience, loyalty and engagement against site goals.
  • Devising and enacting the audience strategy which sets out how we curate our journalism to maximise impact and audience. That strategy should focus on loyalty, engagement and reach, and using data to inform everything we do.
  • Lead our search presence, growing our rankings and demonstrating SEO best practice to drive audiences from search products
  • Liaising with all other parts of Yahoo UK to instil a data-driven culture of editorial decision-making – across News, Sport, Finance, Lifestyle and Entertainment teams - as well as audience research and product teams.
  • Leading our analytics function, using standard methodology data analysis across a range of tools to produce impactful insights that are shared and actioned broadly within the team.
  • Lead a consistent, insights-driven posting strategy across all platforms and content teams, ensuring our accounts are fun, factual, entertaining and programmed to the highest standards
  • Represent Yahoo externally in our relationships with third parties, leveraging our partnerships to ensure we have access to the latest features and insights on platform strategy
  • Experimentation with emerging platforms to help identify future success and growth opportunities
  • You will also work with our commercial teams on how we promote branded content across our channels and helping forecast sponsorship opportunities
  • Ensure our style and tone guidelines are observed across HuffPost UK’s platforms and distribution partners


We are looking for someone who…

  • Has significant experience working in a fast-paced national digital newsroom
  • Has a sophisticated understanding of how to use data to inform journalism
  • Can influence and guide senior decision-makers as a peer
  • Is a passionate follower of current events, politics, international news and popular culture
  • Can demonstrate gravitas by being able to hold their own with editors and senior staffers
  • Has strong communication skills and is able to guide and influence a team of journalists
  • Has a consistent track record of developing teams and recruiting talent
  • Has experience leading analysts. This is ideal but not necessary.
