Purpose of job:

To build on the i’s strong science coverage. Working with the Science Correspondent, the Science Reporter will provide daily stories and scoops contending for the splash (in print and online) on science.

They will also work on long-form features, analysis and investigations, as well as plan coverage and campaigns. The reporter will have a comprehensive knowledge of scientific developments and be able to explain sophisticated and difficult concepts in accessible ways.

They will brief editors on discoveries, provide information for graphics and offer comment, analysis and explainers. They will be expected to attend conferences.

The Science Reporter will build and maintain contacts within the scientific community, negotiating exclusives with researchers and securing experts for comment and analysis on existing stories.

The role will range across print and digital. The correspondent will be able to react quickly to developing events and respond rapidly online. Experience of providing expert comment on radio and TV would be an advantage.

About i

i is Britain’s brightest and newest national newspaper. It was bought from ESI Media in 2016 and has evolved into a highly successful standalone title, bolstered last year by the relaunch of the iweekend edition. We are currently on a recruitment drive so we can produce even more of our own original content.

The inews.co.uk website has embarked on a period of steep growth. Last year its audience grew by 457%. The i’s editorial staff has grown every year since its launch to match the audience and financial success of the brand across all platforms.

Key areas of responsibility

  1. Find and write science stories including exclusives that will be splashes in print and online.
  2. Plan, prepare and execute features and investigations.
  3. Plan, prepare and execute campaigns.
  4. Write quickly and accurately to a high standard.
  5. Represent i in an expert capacity on TV, radio and other media, if appropriate.
  6. Build up and nurture strong relationships and sources within Whitehall, Parliament, universities and scientific bodies and research groups.
  7. Use audience data to help identify and inform story selection and investigations.
  8. Show initiative and produce a consistently high standard of work without supervision.
  9. Carry out any other reporting duties that may be required.
  10. React quickly to moving events.


Qualifications and Experience

  • The Science Reporter will have a proven track record in national news journalism, in print or online, or at least two years’ experience working for a respected regional news organisation or trade title.
  • Track record of developing stories to create impactful journalism.
  • Track record of working in a breaking news environment.
  • Strong knowledge of how exclusive stories should be sourced, developed and presented, with a focus on accuracy.
  • Familiar with working to tight deadlines.
  • Command of libel law, understanding of and compliance with Editors’ Code of Practice and IPSO regulations. NCTJ (or similar) standard qualification.
  • Understanding of all digital platforms, including social media.
  • Must be able to write quickly, accurately and with flair.
