Reports to: Comment Editor

Purpose of job:

To plan and deliver the opinion section of the i newspaper and website in conjunction with the Comment Editor.

To deputise for the Comment Editor in her absence, and contribute features to the arts and features sections. The role will include taking daily responsibility for parts of the opinion section, commissioning pieces, sourcing new writers, writing pieces and assisting with other tasks as and when they arise.

This role covers both online and print, and would involve writing, commissioning and editing. The section runs across a six-day week, so occasional Sunday working would be required.

About i

i is Britain’s brightest and newest national newspaper. It was bought from ESI Media in 2016 and has evolved into a highly successful standalone title, bolstered last year by the relaunch of the iweekend edition. We are currently on a recruitment drive so we can produce even more of our own original content.

The inews.co.uk website has embarked on a period of steep growth. Last year its audience grew by 457%. The i’s editorial staff has grown every year since its launch to match the audience and financial success of the brand across all platforms.

  2. Edit pieces for accuracy, style and structure, and work with writers on edits when necessary.
  3. Upload commissioned pieces to the site including furniture and imagery, and work with SEO and social media editors to optimise audience.
  4. Lay out parts of the daily section in print.
  5. Plan future coverage, including working with publishers around book releases and extracts, and scouting out new writers.
  6. Assist with securing well-known writers and figures to write for the Saturday iweekend edition.
  7. Contribute arts and general features when required, including pitching ideas and developing them with the Arts and Features editors.
  8. Edit and curate opinion pieces from sister publications.
  9. Oversee the opinion matrix.
  10. Edit the section across print and online when the Comment Editor is absent, including attending morning conference and working with the editor on the run of the day’s pieces
