Job Introduction

One of the fastest-growing national newspaper websites in the UK is seeking a talented journalist to oversee coverage of the latest breaking news overnight.

The successful candidate will be full of ideas and be ahead of the curve in terms of forward-planning and generating unique angles in a fast-paced online newsroom.

They will carry out reporting and will be expected to work from 11pm-7am. This is a fantastic opportunity for a trained digital journalist looking to take the next step in his/her career.

Experience on the nationals, at a busy regional or agency and/or in a digital news environment is highly desirable, as is knowledge of SEO and social media.

This is an exciting chance to land a permanent staff job in our Canary Wharf HQ and could lead to a position in our daytime team.

Key Responsibilities

  • To focus on breaking news content on a day-to-day basis in the UK and overseas, ensuring that the focus is always on the site's most-searchable stories.
  • To show an understanding of the websites' key content and ensure a steady flow of this content.
  • To write news and analysis for the website and cover live events and use your PR and news contacts to pull in exclusive interviews and news stories that will deliver a richness of content to the site.
  • To push content via Facebook, Google+ and Twitter, in accordance with the digital social media policy.
  • To optimise stories in accordance with the digital SEO strategy.
  • To stay on top of all developments in the news and cover those on the site.
  • To be able to react quickly to breaking news stories.
  • To, wherever possible, identify unique headlines and angles for stories covered elsewhere to make content more searchable.
  • To keep a close eye on content and, where necessary, correct typos and factual errors and flag possible legal concerns.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of media law.
  • To write and edit in accordance with digital house style.
  • To manage and foster relationships, where needed, to generate blogs and columns.
  • To read all the major global sites and form a thorough knowledge of competitors.
  • To constantly monitor social media for breaking stories and reaction.


The Ideal Candidate

  • At least three years' experience in journalism and ideally some editing experience.
  • Proven track record in breaking exclusives, building strong contacts and copy editing.
  • Outstanding editing, writing and subbing skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines, multitask, forward plan and have a good eye for content that works best online.
  • Experienced digital journalist with familiarity with CMS, Photoshop, Google Analytics.
  • Understanding of different types of web traffic, and how to increase organic traffic and a strong news sense.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to nurture and develop writing talent, grammatical and organisational skills.
  • Professional understanding of journalism law.
  • Understanding of the online market and the expectations of the reader.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Must be prepared to work overnight shifts.
