Job Details

The role

Reporting to the digital editor, you will play a big part in driving our daily output of news, features and comment, as well as helping us expand our 500,000-plus following on social media.

The Cricketer has enjoyed tremendous growth over the past 12 months and we are looking to continue that trend with the recruitment of an ambitious, motivated and talented new member of our team ahead of an exciting summer, which includes both the Ashes and a home World Cup.

You will have an outstanding knowledge of cricket and a willingness to learn the ropes in a small but busy newsroom, reacting quickly to breaking stories and following up on ideas of your own.

You will play a major role in our social media output, assisting the social media editor across our various channels, and have an opportunity to contribute video and audio to our ever growing portfolio.

The position will also involve some commercial work, in particular supporting our digital clients and assisting with the running of events and significant projects such as the National Village Cup and Kia Summer Smash.

The candidate

You will be confident sourcing and writing engaging stories, knowledgeable in SEO and the use of keywords, diligent in your presentation of content and willing to try your hand at new skills.

You will have a strong understanding of social media channels - especially but not limited to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram - and be able to exhibit creativity in those areas.

A working knowledge of web and social media analytics would be advantageous, as would an understanding of HTML or equivalent.

An NCTJ qualification - or imminent NCTJ qualification -  is desirable but not essential, depending on the candidate.

You must love cricket and show a wide knowledge and understanding of the sport.

You should be proactive, a team player, comfortable coming up with ideas and presenting them to a team, and willing to work long or irregular hours as and when the job demands.

The role will suit a graduate journalist on the lookout for his or her first or second step on the sports reporting ladder during perhaps the most exciting summer English cricket has ever witnessed.

Unfortunately, we are only able to accept applicants who have an existing right to work in the United Kingdom.

Location and start date

This is a full-time position based in south London, not far from The Oval, starting as soon as possible.
