Job Details

Gillian de Bono’s decision to step down as Editor of How to Spend It creates an opening for a new Editor.

The successful applicant will lead and manage an experienced, highly professional team across How To Spend It print and digital as well as brand extensions.

These include a monthly Italian language edition in collaboration with Il Sole 24 Ore, FT Live’s Business of Luxury conference  and the How to Spend It stage at the annual FT Weekend Festival.

Under Gillian’s 25 year editorship, How To Spend It has won more than 20 awards and become one of the FT’s commercially most successful titles and a world renowned , prestigious luxury and lifestyle publication.

The successful candidate will therefore need leadership qualities to take the title forward in a new era. These include a deep understanding of the elements that have driven the brand’s editorial and commercial success and a clear vision for a print and digital future that will build on this.

S/he will require flair, strong brand awareness, a deep understanding of the luxury sector and style, design skills and ideas for the future development of HTSI products.

How To Spend it currently has 34 issues a year, a standalone website with daily postings and a soon-to-be relaunched app.

We are looking for a senior magazine professional with:

  • Strong track record of commissioning and editing newsworthy and engaging luxury lifestyle features across a wide range of subjects
  • Extensive contacts within the luxury industry
  • A public profile, built on high standards of journalism
  • Strong people skills to motivate and manage a team
  • Good relationships with HTSI’s specialist writers
  • Instincts for recruiting and retaining new talent
  • Ability to manage a budget and liaise closely with commercial colleagues

Design and photography are also central to How to Spend It’s success and the ideal candidate would have a discerning eye for a striking layout.

This role requires considerable organisational, interpersonal and communication skills in order to manage a complex production schedule incorporating daily website postings with a magazine that changes from monthly to fortnightly to weekly at different times of the year.

An ability to optimise and manage budgets is also essential, as is an entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm for working with the commercial team on initiatives that create and optimise revenue opportunities while upholding FT values of editorial independence.

The new editor of HTSI will report to Alec Russell, the editor of FT Weekend.

All staff are welcome to apply for editorial vacancies as part of a flexible working arrangement. If you believe this role can be managed part-time or as a job share then please provide details as part of your application.

All proposals will be seriously considered. While approval will be conditional on the demands of the role and team, the FT is committed to being responsive to the needs of its staff and the different ways they may want to work.

Applications should be made via Workday by 2 May 2019.
