Liberty is launching an exciting new project using the tools of investigative journalism to expose and challenge abuses of power and violations of human rights.

In developing this project, we are inspired by success Liberty has had in using simple FOI requests to uncover important human rights stories and exciting by the possibility of applying a broader range of investigative methods for even greater impact.

We are also looking to support the critical role investigative journalism has always played in challenging abuses of power at a time when support for this function is needed more than ever.

We are looking to build small team who understand the power of telling stories and the role that journalism plays in mobilising action in the public interest.

The team will undertake investigations designed to change narratives around human rights, boost Liberty’s existing campaigns, help launch new campaigns, and take Liberty’s issues to brand new audiences.

You will share our passion for human rights issues and commitment to Liberty’s strategic campaigning objectives, while also demonstrating a deep understanding of and respect for the norms of professional journalism.

You will work with Liberty’s Advocacy and Communications teams to identify areas for investigation within Liberty’s broad strategic priorities.

You will work with significant independence on developing stories within those priority areas.

And, with the support of our Communications team, you will develop relationships with third party news organisations to collaborate in the investigation and/or publication of stories, as well as to produce original content for Liberty’s owned communication channels.

We are looking for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit who is self-motivated, capable of working independently and interested in experimenting with a novel way of working.

The Investigator role would be an ideal position for a person with some experience in investigative journalism and a strong passion for human rights who wishes to further develop their skills in the context of public interest journalism.

The Senior Investigator role would be an ideal position for someone with more significant experience in investigative journalism who wants to lead an innovative project, apply their skills creatively in a new context, and develop management experience supported by a well-established organisational infrastructure.

The positions will be for a fixed-term contract of two years, with the possibility of a permanent role after the conclusion of a project evaluation and subject to funding.
