Times Higher Education is seeking an experienced journalist, based in Hong Kong, to lead and develop our editorial presence across Asia, writing news and features for an award-winning publication with a global audience.

Higher education is a rewarding area to cover and, as the leading source of global news, insight and data on higher education, THE has ambitious plans to continue to extend its reach and audience.

This is a job with a broad remit and a high degree of autonomy and will require someone with considerable ability both to lead and implement a coherent editorial strategy for Asia, as well as to represent THE and our influential World University Rankings within the sector.

The successful candidate will also be required to work closely with colleagues in THE’s data and consultancy teams.

About us

Times Higher Education was founded in 1971 and, from its roots as a UK policy magazine, has developed into the world’s leading source of higher education news, analysis and data.

Headquartered in London, it continues to publish a weekly print magazine and has a rapidly growing online audience, reaching an audience of around 30 million academics, higher education professionals and students every year.

Key to this growth has been the development of our uniquely influential suite of university rankings, including the flagship THE World University Rankings.

THE now has operations and offices around the world, delivering the THE World Summit Series of leadership events in every continent, and with a portfolio of data, hiring and branding products.

THE is expanding its editorial operation to serve this rapidly growing global audience.

The role:

The successful candidate will be expected to lead THE’s coverage of Asian higher education, working in collaboration with the London-based newsdesk and colleagues based around the world.

The successful candidate will be expected to set their own news agenda, write news, features and newsletters, and contribute to the commissioning of opinion pieces.

The successful candidate will also be expected to represent THE and our influential World University Rankings at THE’s own summits and external sector events, and to contribute and add value to a growing business which engages with universities in a wide range of ways, including consultancy based on our in-house expertise in data and insight.

We would expect the successful candidate to be based in our Hong Kong office.

Who you are:

We are looking for a self-starting journalist with a track record of delivering exclusive, agenda-setting news and features. A proven ability to multi-task and to work with a considerable degree of autonomy is a must.

Prior experience covering education would be an advantage but is not essential, as is fluency in Mandarin.

It is essential that the successful candidate should show a willingness and ability to develop and maintain a deep understanding of the issues covered by THE, and to understand and adhere to THE’s editorial and news values.

The successful candidate will also need to be able to learn quickly about THE’s complex business, including our rankings and data business, and to play a key role in delivering commercial consultancy, as well as general advocacy, for THE as the world’s leading provider of data, insights and intelligence on global higher education.
