TATLER Editorial is looking for a fast, reliable and meticulous Deputy Copy Chief to join their small and dynamic team.

The ideal candidate will have already held this position (or similar) on another title and be proficient in InDesign and CMS.

With a thorough grasp of English grammar and spelling, they should be able to cut and/or rewrite copy sensitively, lucidly and accurately, but also to recognise when to exercise restraint.

They will have the curiosity, resourcefulness and tenacity to verify statements of fact beyond reasonable doubt. They should be able to write brilliant heads and sells and have a proper understanding of the Tatler world.

The successful candidate will be part of a flexible and lean subbing team responsible for juggling numerous tasks across multiple issues and platforms.

When the Copy Chief is away, the successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the copy desk, managing the magazine’s production schedule and communicating with other departments on the magazine.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • A proven writer and sub-editor, you’ll have a meticulous eye for detail, accuracy and a killer coverline.
  • Fact-checking all stories to ensure all published content is correct and of the highest standard.  
  • Sub-editing and proof-reading all editorial content for both magazine and website, including cutting, fitting and sensitive rewriting of copy.
  • Writing headlines, sells and captions for editorial content according to Tatler house style and tone.
  • Assisting the Copy Chief in managing the magazine’s production schedule.
  • Liaising with other Tatler departments including digital on a daily basis.
  • Working efficiently and independently to meet tight weekly and monthly production deadlines.
  • Running the subs desk in the absence of the Copy Chief.


Essential Skills & Requirements:

  • Exceptional organisation and time- and people-management skills are essential. You will already have experience of working on a copy desk.
  • Confidence in fact-checking and proof-reading copy as the final step responsible before publication.
  • Good communication skills, comfortable dealing with all levels of staff.
  • Experience with workflow systems and an inside-out knowledge of Adobe desktop products.
  • Proficient in CMS.
