New Scientist, the world’s leading science and technology magazine, is looking for an exceptional, creative, innovative and extremely organised picture editor to run its picture desk in London.

Reporting to the art editor, they will be responsible for sourcing all images for the award-winning print magazine as well as supporting our rapidly evolving digital vision and live events business.

The successful candidate should have experience of working on a national title, with a detailed understanding of picture research, excellent contacts with image libraries and photographers, coupled with strong commissioning experience.

An interest in science and technology will be a strong advantage. A flair for taking photographs would be a nice-to-have.

They will have knowledge of the New Scientist universe, and will be proficient in Photoshop and Adobe InDesign.

Highly motivated, enthusiastic and self-starting, they will confidently maintain all our visual standards – working closely with our news, features, digital and arts teams - and also be keen to get involved in projects across the company including in commercial, marketing and live events.

They will work closely with the digital team on innovative digital projects and on visual experiments across our powerful social media channels.

The successful candidate will also work to improve New Scientist’s picture processes and structures, and work closely with our technology and production teams to improve our tools.

They will manage a picture team of at least one other picture editor.
