Job Details

The Daily Mirror is looking to recruit an assistant chief sub-editor.

The successful candidate will assist in the management of a team of production staff and be responsible for overseeing the production of pages and their content.

He or she will need to ensure our stories and headlines are accurate, well-written, entertaining, informative and error-free. He or she will be expected to work well under pressure and hit production deadlines.

The successful candidate will also carry out various administrative duties to ensure the smooth running of the department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in the management of a team of sub-editors. Briefing sub-editors on stories then checking subbed copy and headlines to ensure it is accurate, informative, entertaining and follows house style. Correcting errors and rewriting where necessary. Ensuring standards of quality are maintained.
  • Spotting and dealing with legal problems and ensuring content adheres to the law and IPSO.
  • Working under pressure of time with changing stories and breaking news, and managing workload to hit headlines.
  • Liaising effectively and co-operatively with reporters, writers and editors, backbench, newsdesk ,features desk, picturedesk and sport.
  • Assisting in the management of staff and carrying out various administrative duties to ensure the smooth running of the department.


The Ideal Candidate

  • Should have exceptional tabloid headwriting and copyediting skills, an eye for detail and the ability to spot mistakes and errors.
  • Have good organisational and interpersonal skills. Be a good communicator and an effective team worker.
  • Have a positive approach and a commitment and determination to hit high standards
