REPORTS TO: EDITOR

JOB PURPOSE:

This is a pivotal position supporting and partnering the Editor in all aspects of editorial creation and production of the magazine, and in the long-term planning and direction of the title. 

This Head of Features will be involved in the promotion and marketing of the title, its spin off titles and its Award ceremonies.

Not only will the Head of Features represent the title externally they will also deputise for the Editor in their absence, including overseeing the Weeklies hub, in particular the Art and Pictures team.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To assist the Editor in the positioning of the magazine and make sure the reasoning is understood by employees.
  • To be aware of the overall balance of the magazine and contribute and implement change where agreed in order to ensure that the editorial and art content of the magazine remain relevant and appropriate for the readership of the title.
  • To motivate the editorial team and be available to employees to discuss issues/problems/suggestions of an editorial nature.
  • To manage and work within the magazine budget in conjunction with the Editor.
  • To develop, create and edit, in consultation or in place of the Editor, innovative and relevant supplements and spin-offs for the magazine.
  • To originate editorial ideas for the whole magazine and to head up the Features Team. To brief and commission writers, assess and comment on all copy, and discuss rewrites where necessary.
  • To help edit travel content and come up with fresh ideas for engaging the audience in these areas. 
  • To suggest changes to editorial if necessary.
  • To read/proof-read copy and proofs at appropriate stages and be able to produce a flatplan with the Chief Sub Editor when needed.
  • To liaise, where necessary, re fees, contracts and rights to be acquired in respect of editorial.
  • To handle legal problems in conjunction with the Editor and Chief Sub-Editor. To oversee feature’s copy and look for any potential problems.
  • To attend and contribute to editorial schedule meetings, coverline meetings, PR and promotional meetings, etc, both inside and outside of work hours when needed.
  • To read and monitor competitive magazines and other activities within the media to keep abreast of new ideas and trends.
  • To represent the magazine as a brand ambassador at all time including outside the office, where appropriate, giving presentations, radio interviews and attending relevant events.

  • Ability to use and act upon own initiative
  • Previous experience working on a celebrity/classic or tabloid title.
  • Previous and demonstrable experience working as a Deputy Editor and /or Deputising for an Editor 
  • Experience commissioning writers, photographers and stylists
