Job Details

Tatler is looking for a Copy Chief to run its busy copy department.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the production process runs smoothly and that the magazine is error-free in every respect.

A flair for headlines, standfirsts and coverlines is essential.

Managing a small team and liaising with the editorial, art, picture and production departments, the successful candidate will have several years’ experience and an intrinsic, in-depth understanding of the Tatler world. S/he will also edit digital content for Tatler.com.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Setting weekly and monthly production targets and aiming to exceed them
  • Working closely with all departments to maintain a smooth workflow
  • Managing a small team and distributing work evenly
  • Fact-checking, copy-editing, fitting and refining pages for Tatler and Tatler.com
  • Generating witty and playful ideas for headlines, standfirsts and cover-lines
  • Sensitively rewriting and cutting copy where necessary
  • Monitoring the design and typographical elements of the magazine and the website’s house style 
  • Ensuring that the magazine is error-free in every respect, including liaising with the Managing Editor about potential legal issues and incorporating any lawyer’s amendments
  • Signing off pages on final proofs and cromalins
  • Liaising with the production department regarding revisions to Sherpas
  • Maintaining and regularly updating the TatlerStyle Guide
  • Occasional commercial work.


Essential Skills & Requirements:

  • A proven track record of running a busy copy department
  • Exceptional organisation, time- and people-management skills
  • A voracious curiosity in the Tatler world and a love of language
  • A true team player
  • A meticulous attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, comfortable dealing with all levels of staff
  • The confidence to flag concerns relating to copy, art or production as and when necessary
  • An inside-out knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Merlin CMS.
