The Wall Street Journal is seeking an experienced editor to run weekend coverage, based at its London hub.

This senior role is crucial to serving The Wall Street Journal's growing weekend digital audience, and to setting up the start of the business week.

The job holder will edit and publish breaking news and features to Wall Street Journal standards and work with senior editors and beat chiefs locally and globally to plan and organize ahead of time to ensure the best possible reader experience.

This accomplished journalist will also be responsible for planning and executing programming decisions on the Journal's native platforms-including mobile, desktop, email alerts, push notifications and newsletters-to inform and engage readers, supervising a Platform Editor who will work alongside him or her and be primarily responsible for executing platform duties and running social media accounts.

Successful candidates must understand the demands of weekend news and readers' expectations and be comfortable making fast, independent decisions, while also collaborating with editors in other regions.

Exceptional news judgment is essential, along with the ability to sharply rewrite, edit and elevate stories of all types with speed and depth under deadline pressure for a digital audience. A deep interest in all areas of news is also essential.

Editors must be versatile and have the ability to handle multiple articles and responsibilities across platforms calmly and efficiently and to the highest standard.

Experience in digital journalism and publishing, plus an appreciation of modern and innovative storytelling techniques, will be advantageous.

The editor will work Thursday through Sunday.

Journalistic skills

  • Exercises superb judgment in packaging and presenting news.

  • Understands how to balance breaking news with enterprise and features journalism.
  • Recognizes the Journal's core digital audience and its needs and expectations.

  • Familiar with the Journal's brand, content offering and various digital/print platforms.
  • Upholds The Wall Street Journal's high standards and ethics.


Digital media skills

These are desirable but not essential at the outset:

  • Ease with editing different types of media, e.g., text, graphics, share text and captions.
  • Shapes informative and engaging packages on digital home pages and within articles.
  • Uses audience data to inform curation and strategy decisions, adjusting as needed.
  • Understands the value of search-engine optimization, notably headlines and tags.
  • Possesses deep knowledge of digital and social-media strategies and publishing tools.
  • Command of newsroom publishing tools, metadata and visual storytelling devices.
  • Ability and willingness to assist in troubleshooting digital publishing issues.
