Part of the senior UK editorial team, the Morning News Editor will be responsible for creating, planning and executing daily news coverage for the Telegraph website and newspaper.

You'll accountable for running the news desk in the early part of the day and briefing the News Editor / Deputy News Editor ahead of the main 12.30pm conference. 

This leadership role will give you full responsibility for delivering a key part of the Telegraph’s coverage, leadership of a large team including reporters and junior editorial staff, with regular opportunities to act up into more senior editorial roles.

The regular work pattern for this role is 6.30am – 15.30pm. You will be expected to work occasional evenings and weekends on a rota basis as part of delivering a full news service.

Key responsibilities

  • Responsibility for creating, planning and executing daily UK news coverage for the Telegraph website and newspaper, supporting the News Editor.
  • Accountable for delivery of the early morning bulletin
  • Responsible for overseeing the whole News Team when the News Editor / Deputy Editor are not around e.g. early morning or when covering other editor roles or on leave
  • Attending key news conferences, presenting plans to senior editorial staff and briefing the team following the meetings
  • Directly managing team members including reporters and junior editorial staff
  • Liaising with other departments to ensure best possible coverage of and audience for news stories

Essential skills required for the role

  • Experience of senior level news editing in national or international newsrooms
  • Ability to seek out exclusive and breaking stories
  • Experience of planning coverage of future news events and preparing diary items of news
  • Embraces digital content and creative ways to tell news stories to online audience
  • Strong ability to write and edit articles clearly, concisely and to house style
  • Able to motivate and develop team members

  • Stays abreast of industry developments and regulations
