The Role

The Executive Editor will support the Editor-In-Chief in lead the running of the magazine on integrated content, events and brand extensions.

Reporting into the Editor-In-Chief, you will help lead the editorial strategy of the brand, working closely with the Executive Digital Editor to ensure a collaborative, creative and cohesive approach.

You will be responsible for knowing our audience inside and out, able to anticipate their needs and forecast trends to meet the changing landscape.

You will not only oversee and finesse our award-winning circulation-growing content, but lead the brand’s editorial involvement in events, brand licensing discussions and broader Hearst projects.

With clear communication and well-defined strategy that places a focus on quality, you will create a winning culture that reflects the Hearst values.

Deputise for the Editor-in-Chief when they are out of the office, for example at Fashion shows.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Work with the Editor-In-Chief and Executive Digital Editor realise the brand strategy and vision, ensuring a clear and unified approach, informed by data, that puts our audience first.
  • Assist in the communication of this vision to internal and external stakeholders, from internal PR and sales, to external PRs, agents and clients. 
  • Manage the team, guiding and supporting them to create best-in-class content that drives conversation amongst our audience, as well as circulation and subscriptions.
  • Shape and implement the over-arching print strategy for the brand, always thinking three steps ahead about where we need to be and how we’re going to get there.
  • Ensure factual accuracy and legal safety of all copy, as well as ensuring our tone remains consistent and our core brand principles are ever-present. 
  • Support the Workflow Director to deliver an effective and efficient workflow, communicating any issues or changes in best practice to the team and Editor-In-Chief. 
  • Ensure all production deadlines are met in accordance with agreed schedules.
  • Work with the Editor-In-Chief and Managing Editor to ensure the smooth running of the print brand financially, from managing budget to processing invoices.
  • Ensure frequent communication of print performance to all key stakeholders, looking at circulation, subscriptions and digital footprint, ensuring KPIs are met. 
  • Work closely with the Executive Digital Editor and Editor-In-Chief to deliver an integrated approach to all content creation and production, ensuring every opportunity is fully exploited and developed to its potential.  
  • Lead the team in continuous creativity, contributing a never-ending stream of ideas for cross-platform content ideas that push the entire brand forwards. 
  • Edit content and push ideas forward, guiding the team to deliver consistent editorial excellence, that will delight our audiences and win awards. 
  • Ensure the team have print KPI's that deliver into the overall brand strategy. 
  • Work closely with stakeholders across the business to grow revenue and enhance our commercial proposition, representing the brand at pitches when necessary.
  • Work closely with the Brand Licensing team to develop brand extensions and support through strategic editorial coverage.
  • Work closely with the Live team to develop our events offering and ensure every experiential offering is on-brand and feeds into our brand strategy. 
  • Work closely with the Executive Digital Editor to maximise the use of audience data through polls, social media and traffic to keep on top of feedback and brand perception. 
  • Be fully immersed in the world  of women’s media, ensuring the brand is on top of the latest trends and leading the news agenda.
  • Build a strong working relationship with our counterparts on ELLE US, exploiting opportunities for collaboration and content-sharing, and keeping up-to-date with their workflows and structure.
  • Promote the brand when necessary through media and public appearances, when there is a clear return on time spent. 


About You

  • A proven track record of running a print brand and managing a team.
  • The ability to multi-task, remaining calm and professional under pressure. 
  • A strong eye for content strategy, comfortable using data and audience feedback to inform content and develop the brand. 
  • Brimming with fresh and exciting ideas for all areas of our brand that will ensure we’re our audience’s go-to title.
