Job Details

The Wall Street Journal is seeking an editor to help drive coverage of the technology industry.

As part of our tech bureau in San Francisco, this person will oversee a team of reporters covering several of the world's biggest and most-influential companies. Candidates should bring intense curiosity and healthy skepticism.

The right person will have the journalistic chops needed to help reporters illuminate institutions that are both opaque and powerful.

She or he will be adept at spotting key themes, conceptualizing stories, helping reporters navigate challenges in information gathering and ensuring copy is compelling and clear.

Candidates should be versatile in and enthusiastic about multiple forms of storytelling, from graphics to charticles to video.

Deep knowledge of tech's inner workings isn't essential, but a passion and ability to learn quickly is.

Tasks / Responsibilities

Content

  • Help conceive, prioritize and drive news and enterprise coverage.
  • Edit news and enterprise stories, sharpening and rewriting when necessary.
  • Work closely with reporters to ensure that stories include all of the necessary elements and meet WSJ standards.
  • Help reporters navigate challenges in identifying sources of and securing information.
  • Ensure that stories are properly packaged with text, visuals, video, inset boxes for related articles or Twitter, timelines, etc., and ensure the packages are optimized for mobile audiences.
  • Ensure that all components are of the highest quality, adhere to WSJ standards and are ready for publication as a complete article-page.
  • Ensure the timely and coordinated publication of all coverage area story packages.

  • Uphold WSJ standards and ethics. Makes sure there are no surprises, the lede is supported, sources are checked.
  • Inspire our journalists to produce their best work on all platforms.
  • Contribute by attitude, example and encouragement to a culture of creativity, enthusiasm, motivation, ownership and professionalism.
  • Serve as a mentor and guide to other colleagues.


Key Attributes / Knowledge / Experience

  • Excellent news judgment.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to edit and elevate news, features and visual elements with speed and depth.
  • Understanding of and empathy with the reporting process.
  • Equally at home in digital media environments and print, with demonstrated excellence in writing and editing in both. Solid grasp of video as a content format.
  • Deep understanding of the audience and membership structure, and how to use insight research and analytics to continually refine this understanding.
  • Deep understanding of the brand values and mission of WSJ -- digital and print -- and how our journalism should be selected, executed and presented in line with those values.
  • Proficiency in basic numeracy and modern research methods. Confident in analyzing the data behind a story.
  • Proficiency in digital and social media strategy and tools.
