Job Details

Job purpose:

The features writer is responsible for researching and writing a range of articles for the print magazine and director.co.uk. The role also entails providing support to the wider editorial team.

The brand:

Director, which SevenC3 produces for the Institute of Directors (IoD) and its members, provides insightful and inspiring topical stories for entrepreneurs and business leaders across the UK.

The features writer will therefore cover issues including regulation, economic policy, export opportunities, corporate governance, finance, technology, inclusivity, leadership skills, mental health and much more.

Key responsibilities:

  • Research topics, generate ideas and write articles, including (when appropriate) the cover feature.
  • Support the editorial team throughout the production cycle, including helping to answer readers’ emails, deal with PR enquiries, plan issues and read proofs.
  • Lead on specific projects, such as managing the reader panel – a group of IoD members who, among other things, contribute to Director’s regular “Ask the execs” feature.
  • Liaise directly with Director’s other internal teams – eg, design and sales – and also with external contacts at the IoD.
  • Help to maintain the magazine’s website and Twitter account.
  • Cultivate a range of contacts in the business community.
  • Represent the magazine at industry events, conferences and seminars.

Ideal skills and experience:

  • The ability to write clear, accurate and concise copy in an authoritative tone that will engage our busy readers.
  • A finger on the pulse of the latest business news and a demonstrable interest in, if not experience of, writing about the subject.
  • The ability to interview high-profile business leaders, politicians and academics.
  • The ability to generate many original ideas.
  • Experience of writing for both print and digital channels.
  • The ability to work in a team and with a range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Experience of software including InDesign and content management systems.
