Job Details

The Stage, the print and online publication for the theatre industry, has an excellent short-term (6 months) opportunity for a talented, multi-skilled layout sub-editor to work on a well-established title.

We require an eagle-eyed, meticulous sub with strong InDesign and Photoshop skills, and knowledge of WordPress, to work across print and digital, ensuring that quality meets the highest levels of accuracy and house style.

Applicants must have strong layout skills, a keen eye for detail and the ability to work on their own initiative and prioritise tasks.

Above all, we are looking for someone with precision for copy editing and a flair for eye-catching headlines, as well as the ability to hook online readers with grabby social media posts.

A journalism qualification would be advantageous, as would an interest in, and knowledge of, UK theatre.

Please note that this is a fixed-term role lasting six months from the start of employment.

Main purpose of the role:

  • To undertake the sub-editing and production of editorial for digital and print, ensuring that quality meets the highest levels of accuracy and house style.
  • Source suitable images for print and digital use.
  • Create and proof pages, ensuring quality design/layout of newspaper pages and digital content.


Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Contribute to editorial production, following quality, house style and speed of delivery requirements.
  • Sub and lay out allocated pages for weekly paper, locate/source pics when necessary.
  • Sub and post digital copy using Wordpress.
  • Create and publish social media output, following house style.
  • Digitise paper for The Stage app.
  • Complete allocated pages and online content to agreed daily deadlines.
  • Always work towards accepted style, standards and legal requirements.
  • Provide cover for team members as required.


Key skills required:

  • First-class copy-subbing and layout skills.
  • Thorough working knowledge of InDesign, Wordpress and Photoshop.
  • Illustrator skills would be an advantage.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Social media skills – crafting eye-catching posts and tweets.
  • Proven experience of meeting production deadlines.
  • Journalism qualification including media law (desired).

Other information:

This is a full-time position for a 6-month period. The office is based in Bermondsey Street, London SE1. The closing date for applications is 4 October.
