Farmers Weekly is looking for a creative and resourceful art editor to join the team. This is a pivotal role working primarily with 25 journalists and sub-editors across print and web, and is both varied and challenging.

It is a position that would suit someone with plenty of initiative who likes a varied workload and enjoys a fast-paced environment.

Reporting to the production editor, the art editor oversees the weekly templated print output of a team of layout sub-editors, ensuring they produce to the correct style and required quality standards, feeding back and helping upskill where necessary.

He or she will take direct responsibility for some of the more design-led layouts, including editorial initiatives and project work.

The art editor also serves the photography and illustration needs of Farmers Weekly magazine and website.

As well as sourcing and optimising images for the daily web and weekly print cycles, he/she is responsible for arranging photoshoots, designing the magazine front cover, commissioning illustrators and creating graphs and graphics as required by the editorial team.

Managing the picture budget, the art editor also negotiates contracts with photographers and image libraries, and is responsible for all digital asset management, copyright agreements and contributor payments.

In addition, the art editor fields image requests from colleagues in Marketing, Projects, Events, Sales and Syndication, and ensures all stakeholders comply with copyright.

Key skills:

  • Creative print designer  
  • Sourcing and editing images for print and web
  • Understanding of copyright for print and web
  • Excellent Photoshop skills
  • Excellent knowledge of InDesign
  • Negotiating and managing photo library and photographer contracts
  • Budget management experience
  • Experience of commissioning photographers and illustrators
  • Familiarity with web tools for creating graphics
  • Co-ordinating imagery / photoshoots for Farmers Weekly projects such as the annual Awards
  • Tagging and archiving images and maintaining DAM
  • Ability to prioritise and work at pace
  • Ability to manage peaks and troughs in workflow and work on own initiative
