TES is looking for an experienced news journalist, ideally with editing experience, to work on its award-winning website and magazine as a deputy news editor.

What you’ll do

This is an exciting and demanding role that will see you helping to news edit the TES news website and magazines, and to further develop our unrivalled daily coverage of schools news and ground-breaking in-depth investigations.

You will be expected to stand-in when the news editor is absent and take sole responsibility for the news content on the website and magazine and for managing our news reporters. You will work with the rest of the TES team in selling what we do on social media.

Last but by no means least you will play a key role in developing and coming up with innovative ideas for our digital news coverage.

You will come up with an abundance of ideas for news stories, investigations and how to treat and present online news in ways that boosts visitors to our website. You will also select from and commission ideas generated by the reporters who you will help to manage and develop.

You will ensure that copy produced for the magazines and online is presented in the most reader friendly, attractive way possible – both online and in print.

Who you are

You should have at least four years’ experience as a journalist on a respected newspaper, magazine or website. You will have a strong track record in finding, breaking and writing exclusive news stories and producing attention-grabbing digital copy.

Some experience of management and news editing would be beneficial. You will combine an enormous capacity for hard work with bottomless pit of original ideas. You will be adept at using social media to promote what you and the rest of our team do.

You will need to be committed, adaptable, flexible and creative; have a nose for a story, strong writing and editing skills and the drive and commitment to contribute to a close-knit team. Prior experience covering education would be an advantage, but is not essential.

We would expect candidates to have an NCTJ or equivalent qualification, but will be most interested in applicants' track record as a journalist.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the country’s leading publication for schools and colleges and to help set the education news agenda.
