Job Details

POLITICO Europe is looking for a Trade Reporter to be based in Brussels.

Working in a three-person team, the reporter will be right at the heart of one of the most high-profile and contentious global policy issues.

The successful candidate will play a crucial role in our reporting of EU trade negotiations in Brussels, and beyond.

This will include spats with U.S. President Donald Trump and potential negotiations with the U.K. Trade underlies many of today’s biggest political clashes on the global scene – from South America to China - and the successful candidate will have a strong appetite for international news coverage and reporting, both in EU institutions and in international gatherings such as the G7.

The beat involves working closely with other policy teams, our sister publication in the US, and covering international institutions such as the WTO.

A key part of the job involves developing and working sources within political and diplomatic circles and navigating the complex political interests at play on both domestic and international fronts.

Trade will also increasingly overlap with Europe’s broader environmental and industrial goals, and any prospective candidate should have an interest in both.

On the ecological side, many EU countries are now demanding that the bloc’s trade agenda should become greener and are refusing to ratify a trade deal with Mercosur over destruction of the rainforest.

In terms of industrial policy, trade defences against China are front and center, and much of our coverage focuses on how Europe copes with concerns over the rise and rise of China Inc.

The successful candidate will have an eye for detail and a track record of rigorous reporting and scoops.

He or she should be a team-worker, with an understanding of how policy is made and influenced by people within governments, lobby groups and industry.

A good understanding of EU policymaking would also be an advantage, as well as strong language skills.

The reporter will also be a public face of POLITICO at events and panels on topics related to trade.
