Times Higher Education is seeking a talented and experienced journalist to join its news desk as deputy news editor on a job-share basis.

The role, which is three days per week, will cover the full range of news desk responsibilities, helping to lead an award-winning team of journalists based both in London and around the world.

The successful individual will be creative and collaborative, with a strong news sense and a demonstrable track record. They will be full of ideas and enthusiasm, and motivated by the opportunity to develop our coverage of global higher education.

The role is initially for a fixed term of 12 months.

About us

Times Higher Education was founded in 1971 and, from its roots as a UK policy magazine, has developed into the world’s leading source of higher education news, analysis and data.

Headquartered in London, it continues to publish a weekly print magazine and has a rapidly growing online audience, reaching an audience of around 30 million academics, higher education professionals and students every year.

Key to this growth has been the development of our uniquely influential suite of university rankings, including the flagship THE World University Rankings.

THE now has operations and offices around the world, delivering the THE World Summit Series of leadership events in every continent, and with a portfolio of data, hiring and branding products.

THE is expanding its editorial operation to serve this rapidly growing global audience, with editorial staff based in the US, Australia, Hong Kong and Germany, as well as in our London newsroom and headquarters.

The role

The deputy news editor will be tasked with supporting the news editor in running a news-gathering operation that digs out and tells the stories that resonate with the largest possible audience in higher education globally.

As well as sourcing, commissioning and editing stories, the successful candidate will need to be able to take ownership of key parts of the news section, overseeing their development and ensuring that they offer must-read journalism which sets the agenda for others.

The successful candidate will need to be able to step up in the news editor’s absence to run the news section in collaboration with our in-post deputy news editor, overseeing the production of the best coverage of global higher education hour-to-hour as well as week-to-week, and managing our team of journalists based around the world.

The successful candidate will need to be able to work across all our platforms – print, online, social and newsletters – and to assist in the development of our journalists.

Who you are

We are looking for an experienced journalist with a track record of delivering to exacting standards and tight deadlines. Experience of a newsroom leadership role, or clear evidence of potential to step into one, is essential.

Key attributes include endless ideas, a sharp eye for a story, perseverance in securing the best coverage possible, a willingness to be creative in your approach, accuracy and deftness of touch as an editor, a keen eye for detail and an infectious hunger and enthusiasm for news.

This role requires clear thinking under pressure and a strong and strict adherence to media law.

Prior experience of covering universities is not essential, but the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the potential to develop an encyclopaedic knowledge of global higher education.

To Apply

We ask all applicants to complete the application form below to send a CV and an accompanying cover letter outlining why you think that you are a good fit for this role and what you think you can bring to THE.
