The Wall Street Journal seeks an experienced and agile reporter in the Midwest.

The reporter will find distinctive, original stories, deftly mixing knowledge of data and policies with on-the-ground reporting in communities throughout the region.

This is a job for a senior reporter. The successful candidate will be able to spot big stories in a region that can often be subtle. Expertise in issues like natural resources (floods and rivers are a big issue), transportation and infrastructure is a plus.

The reporter will develop sources in and around state government to break news and write compelling enterprise stories.

As part of the Journal's U.S. News team, the reporter will also be called on to help cover major breaking news events.

The right candidate will have a passion for the subjects and a demonstrated ability to generate story ideas, break news, and translate in-depth reporting into storytelling accessible to a broad readership.

The job is based in Chicago with the expectation of traveling across the region. It will report to the Midwest bureau chief in Chicago.
